Carroll EMC Receives Energy from New Jeff Davis Solar Facility

(Last Updated On: December 21, 2017)

Carrollton, Ga. – Carroll EMC is among nine electric cooperatives in Georgia that are receiving power from a new 52MWAC solar-generating facility now in operation in Jeff Davis County near Hazlehurst, Ga.

The new facility is located on 480 acres just a few miles from the initial phase of the project — a 20MWAC solar project that was completed in late 2015. Both facilities were developed by Silicon Ranch Corporation of Nashville, TN. Green Power EMC, a renewable energy provider owned by 38 Georgia Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs), is purchasing the full power output of the solar facilities and providing it to participating electric cooperatives.

Hazlehurst Phase II includes more than 630,000 solar panels that track the sun on its daily east-west pathway across the sky, resulting in an increase in energy production capability over fixed-base technology. The Phase II solar facility will provide enough low-cost, renewable power to help serve more than 8,500 EMC households annually.

James Layton, Carroll EMC System Engineer Manager said energy received from the Hazlehurst Phase II project will be available to Carroll EMC Members through the co-op’s resource mix. Consumers can contact the cooperative at 770-832-3552 for more information.

“We’re excited to participate in this innovative renewable energy project,” said Layton. “Along with our more traditional sources of energy, solar power is a vital part of our strategy to serve our consumers as efficiently and economically as possible using a diversified energy portfolio.”

Carroll EMC is a Member-owned cooperative providing electricity to approximately 50,000 homes and businesses. The co-op serves Members in Carroll, Haralson, Heard, Paulding, Polk and Troup counties.
