“Studies show that people make about 35,000 choices per day. Many of these choices can have a crippling effect on our personal wellbeing and overall health,” says Susan Wis, owner of Renew Life and Wellness Coaching in Bremen.
Susan is a Master Certified Life and Wellness Coach, Holistic Health Practitioner, and Natural Health Educator who focuses on helping people overcome life challenges and health issues by identifying and addressing emotional and physical imbalances in the body.
“I take a natural and holistic approach in educating and supporting my clients with the most current information in natural health and wellness,” says Susan. “I focus on whole-foods and plant-based solutions, such as herbs, homeopathics, essential vitamins, trace-minerals, botanicals, and essential oils.”
Susan points out 5 major ways that people unknowingly sabotage their health by thinking that exercise and healthy eating are the only keys to optimal health.
On average, the body is 65-70% water. A loss of 2% of that water is the tipping point for mild dehydration. The best way to avoid dehydration, particularly during hot summer months, is to be sure you and your loved ones are drinking plenty of pure water on a daily basis, at least half of your body weight in ounces of filtered water. If you are exerting yourself or out in the heat, drink even more water.
Avoiding dehydration is as simple as drinking enough pure water on a daily basis but so many just don’t do this. Surveys indicate that 60-75% of Americans do not drink enough water daily (1).
There’s a lot more to dehydration than simply feeling very thirsty. Signs of dehydration can also include spasms, tension in your neck or jaw, constipation, vomiting, and heart problems (2). Many people who experience symptoms like trouble concentrating or lingering muscle pains have no idea that they’re really suffering from preventable dehydration symptoms. Research is now showing how much dehydration can impact overall moods and cognitive functions, contributing to impairments in vision, perceptive discrimination, tracking, recall, attention, psychomotor skills and memory (3). When you realize the high price your body will pay from a mild to serious case of dehydration or hypernatremia, you’ll be asking for more water to drink everyday.
The main benefits of staying hydrated are simple—increase energy, manage mood and cognitive function, and less tension, body aches, and muscle pains.
Poor Gut Health
An aggravated digestive tract that begins to “leak” particles, bacteria and other substances into the bloodstream is called Leaky Gut. The GI tract is aggravated by stress, toxins, undigested foods, medications, pathogens, and organ dysfunction; and its being stressed can cause inflammation, food intolerances, arthritis, fatigue, headaches, and autoimmune issues. An automated symptoms analysis that will give you a clear picture of your overall health can be submitted here for a discounted price: PhysiciansHR.
In simple terms, a toxin is any matter harmful to the body. There are internal, external, and behavioral toxins that can build up in the body. Our body actually produces its own toxins and has natural processes in place to remove them (detox.) The toxins become dangerous when they accumulate and overload the liver and kidneys, causing cell, tissue, and even DNA damage.
We can never be free of toxins, but we can reduce the amount that we put into and on our bodies by eating clean, whole foods free of hormones, chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful ingredients; using natural and organic health and beauty products free of more than 80,000 chemicals that may be used in commercial brands; and limiting stress, smoking, alcohol, extreme dieting, and overeating.
Vitamin and Mineral Intake/Absorption
It is possible to be deficient in almost every nutrient, but these 7 are by far the most common: Iron, Iodine, Vitamins D, B12, A, Calcium, and Magnesium.
Children, young women, the elderly, and vegetarians seem to be at the highest risk of several deficiencies. The best way to prevent a deficiency is to eat a balanced, real food-based diet that includes nutrient-dense foods (both plants and animals). However, supplements can be necessary when it is impossible to get enough from the diet alone.
The type of supplements that you take can be crucial to proper nutrition. Studies show that some over-the-counter vitamins and mineral supplements you buy at large retailers don’t actually contain what they say they have on the label. It’s a matter of “what appears to be the practice of substituting contaminants and fillers in the place of authentic product,” according to one study by the attorney general’s office. We are not taking in the nutrition we need and are adding harmful chemicals and toxins that we do not need. Each person is biologically different. Some people need different amounts of minerals or different kinds in greater proportions. Having good, quality supplements that are specific to your body’s needs is crucial to maintaining a healthy body.
Testing for accumulated toxins, acidosis (an excessively acidic condition of the body fluids or tissues), vitamin and mineral levels, food intolerances, chemicals, molds, and other harmful matter in the body is the first step to healing. All of these things can have a huge negative effect on your body, and most people never realize it. You can learn more on my website about the testing that I do.
Not Enough Self-Care and Relaxation
Taking time to relax our mind and our body is imperative. Stress is one of the top causes of disease and premature death. It’s important to identify your stressors in your home, work, and relationships and evaluate where your biggest sources of stress come from.
We have individual stress tolerance levels that if reached can cause emotional, physical, and hormonal imbalances. Cortisol is a stress hormone that has many functions. It helps the body use sugar (glucose) and fat for energy (metabolism), and it helps the body manage stress. Chronic, high cortisol production is tied to symptoms and ailments including weight gain, anxiety, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, and fertility problems, in addition to many other issues.
Teaching stress reduction techniques and stress management skills is one of the primary goals at Renew Life and Wellness, where I work in partnership with clients to facilitate positive, healthy, and sustainable lifestyle changes for a better quality of life.
The whole-mind-body-spirit (holistic) approach to wellness goes beyond food and diet and focuses on the importance of the whole person rather than specific symptoms and explores the many ways that a client can improve their quality of life.
