With personal and campus security emerging as a topic of conversation among students and residents in college towns across the country, the University of West Georgia and Stanley Black and Decker are joining forces for their second safety summit and career event Sept. 8-9.

Speakers will address different security topics – including cybersecurity, campus safety and tool safety – at the UWG Safety and Security Summit on Sept. 8.

Attendees of a special tailgating event at UWG’s football game the next evening will be able to get up close and personal with Joe Gibbs Racing’s STANLEY and DEWALT NASCAR show cars driven by Matt Kenseth and Daniel Suarez. They also will have the opportunity to bid on a signed item from Kenseth through a special auction benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“The safety of our students, faculty, staff and community remains our top priority,” said UWG President Kyle Marrero. The summit is part of UWG’s Protect Our Pack initiative, a proactive effort to promote and ensure safety on campus through training, information and enhanced security procedures.

“Beyond just talking about safety, we are working actively on a number of fronts – like this summit – to ensure it,” Marrero said. “Our hope is to equip people with the knowledge and skills to build more secure lives.”

Scheduled summit speakers include Gary Will, assistant vice president of campus safety and emergency response management at Berry College; campus security experts from D. Stafford and Associates; and FBI cybersecurity computer scientist Hesz Rivera. UWG campus police will be on hand to greet attendees and answer questions about UWG’s safety initiatives.

“Stanley Black and Decker continues to partner with campus communities who are committed to the safety and success of their students – not only while they are enrolled, but after they move into the next chapter of their professional development,” said Stanley Black and Decker Vice President of Commercial Strategy Business Development Kyle Gordon.

The Sept. 8 summit, which runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the UWG Coliseum, is open to everyone. Attendance is free and lunch will be provided. Participants are asked to register at stanleycss.com/uwgsummit2017.

The focus will shift into a different gear on Sept. 9, when Stanley Black and Decker brings its NASCAR show cars to University Stadium as the Wolves take on Miles College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Stanley representatives will be on hand to meet students and discuss career opportunities with the company. Students from all majors are welcome.

“Many of us started our careers with Stanley Black and Decker right from college campus recruiting events,” Gordon said. “This is a great time to meet and greet in a fun and relaxed environment.”

Fans will be able to bid on a special commemorative racing jacket and a “Made in the USA w/ Global Materials” DEWALT Tool Set with all proceeds benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, one of the charities supported by UWG, Stanley Black and Decker and the Gulf South Conference.

“Whether it’s assisting in making our communities safer, helping students launch secure careers or working to make children’s wishes come true, we at UWG are about changing lives,” Marrero said. “We are thankful to Stanley Black and Decker for joining us in that pursuit and we hope our friends and neighbors from the Carrollton community and beyond will partner with us as well.”
